This book explains what dictatorship is and how it has changed over time. Long ago, in ancient Rome, a dictator was a leader chosen only during emergencies, like wars or big problems. They had full control, but only for a short time. Once things were better, they had to give up their power. This was very different from the way we think about dictators today.
After the First World War, the meaning of dictatorship changed. Instead of being temporary, modern dictators try to stay in power forever. They do not just control the government; they also control people’s lives, making all the rules and decisions. This kind of rule is called totalitarianism, where one person or a small group has complete control over everything.
The book also talks about how some countries tried to allow temporary dictatorships in emergencies while keeping democracy safe. For example, Germany and Spain had special rules in their constitutions to allow this. However, some leaders misused these rules to stay in power for a long time.
When World War II ended, the world thought that the days of Authoritarianism Fascism & Totalitarianism was over. Unfortunately did not turn out to be! When you read the Permanent Revolution book. It shows the similarities of what is happening now in the USA and in Europe about how the leaders are climbing into power and now are using their base to go after the democracy, the freedom and the liberty of all the people. It is a well written book about the history from 1919 to 1940 of the rise of the Authoritarian Fascism Totalitarianism that is taking place right now from 2017-2025.
